The Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation, the IRZ, organised a Regional Conference of Constitutional Courts on the topic “Freedom of Religion in Constitutional Court Practice”, which took place in Teslić from 16 to 18 October 2019.
The Conference was attended by the Presidents and Judges of the Constitutional Courts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Montenegro, the Republic of Croatia, the Republic of North Macedonia, the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Serbia, as well as by representatives and legal experts of the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation, the IRZ.
Zlatko M. Knežević, the President of the Constitutional Court, and Dr Stefan Pürner, Attorney at Law, the IRZ, the Head of South-East Europe Division, opened this year’s Conference and gave a welcome speech.
In 2003, the Constitutional Court launched an initiative to hold a meeting of the constitutional courts of the countries in the region. The aim of the initiative was to exchange experiences, views and practices on the application of law in the field of the rule of law, protection and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as to establish professional cooperation on other issues of common interest and importance for the constitutional courts of countries in transition. The constitutional courts of the countries in the region accepted the initiative and the tradition of holding regional conferences, each time with a different topic of common interest, has been ongoing since then.
The Conference, along with the numerous quality presentations/papers on the topic of the Conference and discussions, highlighted the issue of freedom of religion in constitutional jurisprudence in the countries of the region. In this regard, the Conference represents another significant contribution to the legal practice and doctrine of the constitutional courts in the region.
All papers presented at the Conference will be published in the Collection of Works of the Conference.
