President of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina Valerija Galić participated in the work of the annual Conference “Effective Asset Recovery in the Wester Balkans”, which was held in Sarajevo on 15 and 16 March 2023. Along with the President, Registrar Sevima Sali-Terzić, Head of the Office of the President Erda Zaćiragić and Head of the Constitutional Case Law Department Ermina Dumanjić attended the Conference.
During the Conference, President Galić made a presentation on the importance of the case-law of the Constitutional Court of BiH and European Court of Human Rights in the cases related to the proceeds of crime. President Galić emphasized that the confiscation of criminal assets was based on a fundamental legal principle that nobody can hold illegally acquired property. The confiscation of illegally acquired property is one of the overall efforts made by the competent authorities to combat corruption in an efficient manner.
The Conference is part of a larger Project “Combating Corruption and Organized Crime in the Western Balkans through Strengthening Regional Cooperation in Asset Recovery” implemented by the AIRE Centre (Advice on Individual Rights in Europe) and the Regional Anti-Corruption Initiative Secretariat (RAI), funded by the UK Government. Over a hundred of judges, prosecutors and other experts of the Western Balkans attended the Conference.
