Professor Dautbašić graduated from the Law Faculty in the University of Sarajevo in 1961 and took up the position of assistant lecturer at the same institution in 1962. Не completed his post-graduate studies at the Law Faculty of the University of Belgrade in 1966, and subsequently his earned his Ph.D. from the same institution in November 1969.
In 1970, he was appointed as assistant professor at the Law Faculty in Sarajevo, for Finance and Financial Law. In 1975, he was promoted to the position of associate professor and then became professor in 1981. Since 1986, he was а member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Economics in Sarajevo, and in 1994, he became а member of the Law Board of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Не held important positions at the University of Sarajevo including Vice Dean of the Law Faculty, President of the Council of the Law Faculty, Dean of the Law Faculty in Sarajevo and а member of the Senate of the University in Sarajevo. Не was а member of various commissions for granting the titles of Master’s degrees and Ph.D.'s at the Law Faculty in the Universities of Sarajevo, Podgorica and Osijek. He was а member of Legal Committee of the Executive Council of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, member of the Legislative Commission of the Assembly of SR BiH and а member of the Constitutional Commission of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1989, he was elected as member of the Constitutional Court of the Socialist Republic of BiH. From 1992 to 1997, he served as the President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of BiH.
Не was an elected member of the Constitutional Court of Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in two election terms. From April 1992 until July 1997, he served as the President of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He has authored numerous textbooks as well as articles and reviews published in national and international magazines. Не served on the editorial and advisory boards of many publications such as the Godisnjak Pravnog Fakulteta (Sarajevo), Pregled (Sarajevo), Finansije (Belgrade), The Encyclopedia of Law (Zagreb), FEBS (Sarajevo) and Opredjeljenja (Sarajevo).
He served as a Judge of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina from May 1997 to October 1998.
